Harvard Business Review (HBR) reported that the direct medical costs of corporations (include medical treatment & pharmaceutical fees) reached only 24% of a company’s health costs, while the loss resulting from indirect medical costs (include long and short-term sick leave, absenteeism, presenteeism but low performance) accounted for 76% of total health costs. In Bank One, for example, the loss caused by presenteeism on job productivity reached $311.8 million; while the loss caused by depression at work costs about $786,600 on aggregate.
